The Challenge
Air Canada Cargo faced significant challenges in its global ground transportation network, including a lack of visibility, standardization, and stability. The trucking portion of the business was growing at about 20% per year, which presented additional challenges. The lack of standardization across different regions led to inconsistent procedures, and poor visibility into logistics information caused frequent settlement disputes with trucking companies. These issues required manual intervention and often resulted in long payment holds.
About The Customer
Air Canada is Canada's largest full-service airline and the largest provider of scheduled passenger services in the Canadian market, Canada-U.S. transborder market, and international market to/from Canada. Together with its regional partner Jazz, Air Canada serves over 32 million customers annually and provides direct passenger service to over 170 destinations on five continents. Air Canada Cargo, the cargo services division, provides direct cargo services to over 150 Canadian and international destinations, including Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia. Additionally, Air Canada Cargo trucks to an additional 155 global destinations, making the trucking network as extensive as Air Canada's flight network.
The Solution
Air Canada Cargo selected BluJay's Transportation Management to overhaul its global ground transportation strategy. The solution provided visibility, standardization, and stability across its global network. Utilizing SaaS technology, the system allowed scalability across multiple divisions and countries. The implementation included features like multiple languages, units of measure, and currencies. BluJay Solutions' WebSettle® technology enabled complete pre-payment audit and freight payment capabilities, improving visibility into trucking companies and speeding up payments. The solution also facilitated increased savings, reduced carrier overcharges, improved productivity, and enhanced collaboration and carrier procurement negotiations.
Operational Impact
  • The global management center in Toronto gained visibility into the entire Global Transportation Network (GTN), including individual trucks, freight, and cost information.
  • With an expanding geographic footprint and a trucking program growing 20% yearly, utilizing a single system with domestic and global features became vital.
  • Productivity and efficiency were greatly improved, saving money in truck utilization, eliminating manual processes, reducing carrier overcharges, and lowering freight spend.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Air Canada Cargo's trucking portion of the business is growing at about 20% per year.
  • Carrier procurement negotiations were reduced to one-fourth the time taken previously.
