The Challenge
Ausgrid used a simplex radio channel via the New South Wales Government Radio Network (NSWGRN) to maintain open communications between maintenance staff and tunnel construction teams. However, this method had major drawbacks and limitations, including drawing maintenance staff away from their duties and relying on land lines and face-to-face meetings for communication.
The Customer

Ausgrid

About The Customer
Ausgrid is Australia's largest public utility, supplying electrical power to 1.6 million homes and businesses in and around Sydney's central business district. They embarked on an $800 million upgrade project called CityGrid, which involved constructing new substations, upgrading cables, and adding a new tunnel to enhance electricity supply.
The Solution
CommScope recommended the use of the ION-M intelligent optical network, a radio-over-fiber repeater platform, to provide additional coverage and rebroadcast NSWGRN signals from dedicated base stations located at Ausgrid's substations. The solution also enabled Wi-Fi access within the tunnel, offering new communication and efficiency opportunities. RADIAX cables were also used to ensure reliable communications underground.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The implementation of the ION-M solution resulted in improved safety, productivity, and cost reduction. The reduction in team sizes and the ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously led to increased efficiency. Faster task dispatching and elimination of periodic status calls saved time. However, specific quantitative benefits such as percentage improvements or cost savings were not mentioned in the case study.
