The Challenge
Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), a China-based international construction group, was contracted for a $440 million expansion and land reclamation project for the Maldives Airport. The project involved extensive land reclamation work, mass excavation, fine grading, and precise runway paving and compaction. The expansion required the removal of four million cubic meters of sand from the inner lagoon adjacent to the airport. The project also involved the construction of a new 3800 meter-long and 65-meter-wide runway, a fuel farm, a cargo complex, and a new terminal. The project faced tight parameters and required streamlined data flow and communication across the build. BUCG sought to improve safety and productivity, optimize operations, and complete the project on time and within budget.
The Customer

China-based Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG)

About The Customer
Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) is a large international construction group based in China. The company primarily focuses on general contracting, real estate development, and design and consultancy. BUCG manages 120 subsidiary companies and 42 branch offices, including one publicly listed company, 27 exclusively-invested companies, and holding companies. BUCG has constructed many of China’s namesake land development projects, including the National Stadium, the National Theater for the Performing Arts, the National Museum, the National Indoor Stadium, the Olympic Basketball Stadium, the Olympic Village, and Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport. In 2016, BUCG was awarded the contract for the expansion of the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport on Hulhule island in the Maldives.
The Solution
BUCG turned to Trimble and MAG Science & Technology Co, Ltd for help. Several Trimble office software solutions were installed, including Trimble Business Center, Trimble Connect, VisionLink, SketchUp Pro, Vico Office. Field solutions included Trimble SPS985, Trimble GCS900, Trimble CCS900, and Trimble PCS900, Trimble NetRS GPS base station receivers, Trimble 4D control monitoring software, and the TX8 for 3D scanning. Trimble Connect, a cloud-based platform, was implemented to power information and data exchange between owners, architects, subcontractors, engineers, and trades. Vico Office was used to generate 4D schedules and estimates directly from 3D models. The Trimble PCS900 Paving Control System was used for asphalt paving, and the Trimble CCS900 Compaction Control System was used for compaction. The Trimble GCS900 Grade Control System was used for bulk earthworks and fine grading work.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Trimble office software and field solutions led to improved collaboration, information sharing, and scheduling across the project. The use of Trimble Connect enabled a more integrated data workflow across the jobsite, leading to better collaboration and communication. The use of Vico Office allowed for the creation of detailed and accurate estimates and schedules, which were critical in keeping the project on track. The use of the Trimble PCS900 Paving Control System and the Trimble CCS900 Compaction Control System led to faster and more accurate paving and compaction. The Trimble GCS900 Grade Control System improved efficiency onsite by accurately positioning the blade or bucket in real time, significantly reducing material overages and improving productivity. The project is currently running on time and on schedule and is on track to be completed in 2019.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Two-year ROI on technology investments due to increased productivity in earthworks, paving, and compaction.
  • Decreased labor costs with 10 fewer crew members required for every paver equipped with the Trimble GCS900 system.
  • Optimized fuel use and machine runtime, and ensured consistent compaction pass counts and meter values.
