The Challenge
R & M Transportation wanted to improve driver safety, productivity, and satisfaction, improve compliance, and make sure customers had instant access to freight tracking information. With an excellent reputation for dependable, on-time delivery, R & M Transportation wanted to improve safety, reduce costs, and improve customer and driver satisfaction.
About The Customer
R & M Transportation was founded in 1991 by Mike Sortino and Randy Williams, a third generation owner in the trucking industry. Based in Omaha, Nebraska, R & M Transportation hauls refrigerated freight throughout the United States, especially meat products from the Midwest to the West Coast, and produce from the West to the Midwest. The company has 175 vehicles, with an average length of haul of 550 miles per day or 2,800 miles per week.
The Solution
R & M Transportation adopted the Mobile Computing Platform 50 (MCP50) and its suite of applications, including CoPilot Truck In-Cab Navigation, Critical Event Reporting (CER), Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR), Hours of Service, and Performance Monitoring (PM). The compact design and reasonable cost of the MCP50 was an important factor in R & M’s decision to adopt the solution. The MCP50’s many features have resulted in big benefits for R & M Transportation, including improved safety, reduced operational costs, and increased driver and customer satisfaction. The CoPilot Truck In-Cab Navigation helps drivers plan routes, access simple directions, and avoid non-truck-approved routes. The Critical Event Reporting (CER) application allows managers to receive near real-time notification of critical events. The Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) application helps fleet managers and drivers stay on top of truck maintenance and repairs. The electronic logs provided by Hours of Service ensure compliance and reduce the worry of log book accuracy.
Operational Impact
  • Improved driver safety, productivity, and satisfaction with reduced out-of-route miles.
  • Improved fleet and driver efficiency with less time at roadside inspections.
  • Improved compliance with better CSA scores and reduced roadside citations and violations.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduced out-of-route miles by 4%.
  • Reduced roadside citations and violations (for traveling on non-truck approved routes) by 100%.
  • Improved fuel efficiency by improving miles per gallon by over 10%.
