The Challenge
Associated Food Stores faced rising transportation expenses and needed to plan better and analyze how routes would impact drivers. They had already purchased a routing software application that required knowledge of a complex operating system (Unix) before licensing Omnitracs Roadnet Technologies’ Roadnet® Transportation Suite. The existing system was cumbersome and not user-friendly, which led to inefficiencies in route planning and execution. Additionally, the company was preparing for a significant operational change, including moving their distribution center 50 miles north, which required a robust solution to manage the transition smoothly.

Associated Food Stores is a cooperative headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, delivering groceries to 600 stores throughout the Midwest. The company is primarily owned by its retailers but also owns 30 of the stores it delivers to. With a fleet of 85 trucks traveling nearly 8 million miles per year, transportation efficiency is crucial for their operations. The company serves a wide area, including Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. Their mission is to provide competitive pricing and high-quality service to their customers, making transportation efficiency a key component of their business strategy.
The Solution
Associated Food Stores implemented Omnitracs Roadnet Technologies’ Roadnet® Transportation Suite, which included Roadnet, Territory Planner, and MobileCast. The Roadnet applications were significantly easier to use, had only one maintenance module, and allowed for faster routing. This suite helped them plan routes more efficiently and communicate delivery changes to customers. The implementation also included the use of MobileCast in conjunction with their on-board computers, providing route visibility and establishing driver performance standards. This allowed Associated Food Stores to analyze historical information, improving the accuracy of their route plans and enhancing customer service.

Moxa was asked to provide a connectivity solution for one of the world's leading cosmetics companies.
