The Challenge
Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) was facing challenges in reporting and data analysis due to the manual extraction of data from MEDITECH. The time-consuming process of creating Excel spreadsheets and cleaning data was not adding value to the leaders as the data was not available in a timely fashion or interpretable to inform day-to-day decision-making. Furthermore, the creation and management of reports required a minimum of two full-time employees. BCHS initially sought a way to make reporting easier. But over time, the organization realized it needed a solution that went beyond reporting, to also encompass data quality and the integration of its back-end systems.
About The Customer
Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) is a large community hospital that delivers healthcare services to more than 120,000 residents in Brantford, Brant County, and Six Nations in southwestern Ontario, Canada. BCHS was formed from the partnership between the Willett Hospital in Paris, and the Brantford General Hospital. This partnership is demonstrative of activity that is reshaping the healthcare industry today, and the new requirements for accurate, real-time reporting and analytics that emerge from those alliances. The Decision Support Team at BCHS was among the many healthcare IT professionals facing such challenges. The team is responsible for providing BCHS leaders with various reports and analyses.
The Solution
BCHS chose business intelligence (BI), data integrity, and integration solutions from Information Builders for their ability to provide end-to-end management of all information assets. BCHS purchased a variety of Information Builders software, including the WebFOCUS BI and analytics platform, iWay DataMigrator, and iWay Data Quality Suite (DQS). The combination of these three solutions provide a single, unified platform that empowers BCHS to integrate data, ensure data accuracy and validity, and synthesize this data for end-users. As a result of the deployment, end users are able to answer critical questions and uncover important trends for both short-term issue resolution and long-term planning.
Operational Impact
  • Patient and clinical activities are now much easier to track, empowering staff across the organization to make better decisions.
  • The amount of time being spent on report generation posed a huge problem for BCHS. This cumbersome process involved manual creation of Excel spreadsheets from information in the organization’s MEDITECH system. Extensive manual information cleansing was also required to locate and correct errors and inconsistencies. Reducing the waste of correction freed up analysts’ time to do more complex analyses and to practice to full scope.
  • With the help of Information Builders Professional Services, BCHS used WebFOCUS to create a graphical dashboard that allows users to track key activities. For example, Emergency Department visits and in-patient flow can be measured by day of the week or time of day. By understanding related trends, and determining when the department will be busiest, BCHS can make informed staffing decisions to better allocate its limited resources.
