The Challenge
The faculty and staff at the College are assigned Hewlett-Packard tablet computers, while the students at the College of Business enjoy free 3-hour checkout privileges to HP tablets owned by the College. Students pursuing minors in Business studies also receive access. Colorado State University needed a way to track these devices as they changed hands and ensure they were protected throughout.
About The Customer
Colorado State University is a public research university located in Fort Collins, in the U.S. state of Colorado. The university is the flagship university of the Colorado State University System. The enrolment is approximately 30,700 students, including resident and non-resident instruction students. The university has approximately 1,540 faculty in eight colleges and 55 academic departments.
The Solution
Absolute helps the IT department track and secure the checked-out computers on a daily basis, providing checks and balances with the manual tracking process. Despite the program's success, a number of security incidents did occur. Because Absolute DDS had been previously installed on the stolen devices, the Absolute Investigations team was able to supply the University Police Department with critical information, leading to the recovery of over $40,000 worth of stolen goods, including 9 HP tablets. Detective Adam Smith of the Colorado State University Police Department called it “the biggest equipment bust in the history of the department.”
