The Challenge
Admixer, an Ad-Tech company, was facing a significant challenge in managing the increasing load on their advertising exchange platform. Initially, the platform was based on the sale of local inventory by external DSPs, but as it began to aggregate the traffic of external SSPs, the load on their processing and storage increased significantly. By the end of 2016, the share of external inventory had risen from 3% to over 90%, translating to an increase from 100 million to 3 billion requests. The existing relational databases could not handle the massive influx of inserts for statistics records. Furthermore, the company was using Azure Table Storage for storing and issuing statistics, but as the number of transactions and the amount of data increased, this solution became suboptimal due to the charges for the number of transactions and the amount of data. Admixer needed a solution that could display real-time advertising transaction statistics, handle a significant amount of data for insertion, aggregate received data, scale the data warehouse as requests grew, and provide full control over costs.

Admixer is an independent adtech company that develops an ecosystem of full-stack programmatic solutions. The company provides all the components necessary to build infrastructure for advertising products for brands, ad agencies, media houses, publishers, ad networks, and other buy- and sell-side industry players looking for effective ad management. Admixer's products include a supply-side platform, a demand-side platform, an ad exchange, and a data management platform. The company was founded in 2008 and has since grown to have over 100 supply and demand partners, 3,000+ customers, and 200+ employees worldwide. They have offices in Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Georgia, and legal entities in the UK and Germany.
The Solution
Admixer turned to ClickHouse to address their challenges. ClickHouse is not tied to any platform, which allowed Admixer to migrate from the cloud. The built cluster could receive up to a million inserts per second and had built-in mechanisms for aggregating and distributing data across tables. It also offered excellent data compression and a reading speed that made it possible to display statistics directly in the user interface in real-time. ClickHouse also has a SQL dialect that provides the ability to build any reports and several advanced functions for processing statistics. It also has built-in HyperLogLog for storing rough data and data sampling. Admixer assembled a cluster with 15 servers for receiving, processing, and storing data from ADX, and a storage cluster for unique users with 6 of the same servers. ClickHouse also allowed Admixer to count unique users by a large number of keys in one report, which was a significant improvement over their previous system.
