The Challenge
Advanced Bionics regularly conducts clinical studies to improve cochlear implant systems. The challenge was to find an easy-to-use analytics solution that could seamlessly resume analyses, share results among team members, and produce high-quality, customizable graphs for presentations and reports. Before adopting STATISTICA, the research staff used various software packages like SPSS, Excel, SPAD, XlStat, SAS, and Matlab. However, these tools did not meet all their needs, particularly in terms of graph quality and ease of use. The need for a more efficient and user-friendly analytics platform was critical to support continuous improvements and scientific progress.
About The Customer
Advanced Bionics, founded in 1993 and partnered with Phonak under the Sonova Group in 2009, is a global leader in the development and manufacturing of cochlear implant systems. These implants are designed to restore hearing to profoundly deaf individuals. The cochlear implant devices consist of an implant with an electrode array inserted surgically in the cochlea and an external processor that transforms sounds into electrical currents sent to the auditory nerve. The sound processor runs specialized software called SoundWave, which is fine-tuned by audiologists and can be uploaded to patients' processors. Advanced Bionics conducts regular clinical studies to update and improve their products, presenting their findings at scientific meetings and conferences worldwide.
The Solution
Advanced Bionics adopted STATISTICA to perform critical statistical analyses for their clinical studies. The European Clinical Research Department uses STATISTICA to assess the performance of cochlear implant subjects in various situations, particularly in post-market studies. One example is the evaluation of the ClearVoice™ feature, which includes the HiRes 120® product with three strategy options for fitting the software. A multicentre clinical study was conducted where patients were randomly assigned to one of the three fitting options, and their experiences were recorded using the APHAB questionnaire. Another area of research involves the FOX™ expert system, which assists clinicians in setting optimal parameters for cochlear implants. This system is being evaluated in a multicentre European study to measure the effects of fitting time in standard and FOX™ assisted fittings. STATISTICA's high-quality, customizable graphs are particularly praised for their use in presentations and reports.
Operational Impact
  • STATISTICA enabled Advanced Bionics to perform critical statistical analyses for their clinical studies, improving the assessment of cochlear implant performance.
  • The high-quality and customizable graphs produced by STATISTICA are universally praised in poster presentations and summary reports at international conferences.
  • The training course provided by StatSoft helped the research team quickly learn and become independent in using the STATISTICA platform.
