The Challenge
In 2011, AIS recognized a shift in customer needs towards more advanced cloud computing solutions. The primary challenges faced by AIS were the need for higher speed to interface compute hosts with storage and the increased complexity of network management tasks. To address these challenges, AIS needed to move to 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) with a higher port density. During the vendor selection phase, AIS discovered that some of their customers were already using Arista Networks products in their colocation space. This, along with insights from IT professionals involved in VMware deployments, led AIS to consider Arista Networks for their cloud computing infrastructure.

The Solution
AIS launched a VMware-based cloud solution in 2012, utilizing their facilities in San Diego and Phoenix. To address the challenges of speed and network management complexity, AIS deployed Arista Networks' 7050S series switches in a Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation (MLAG) configuration. This setup simplified the dual 10GbE-connected hosts and storage array configurations. The initial deployment was followed by the addition of more 7050S series switches and several 7048T Gigabit Ethernet switches. AIS's IT engineering staff appreciated the out-of-band remote management capabilities offered by these switches, which added convenience and efficiency to their operations. The deployment of Arista Networks' switches enabled AIS to achieve superior I/O performance, which was recognized and praised by their customers.
