The Challenge
Florida Atlantic University (FAU) was faced with the challenge of standardizing on a single analytic solution university-wide to facilitate reporting consistency, meet regulatory and accreditation guidelines, and improve decision-making for performance-based funding objectives. The State of Florida had adopted performance-based funding (PBF) for its public colleges and universities, replacing traditional enrollment metrics with outcome metrics such as graduation rate, employment, and student success in the classroom. FAU needed to improve and document student outcomes and measures to support its mission. The university sought to operationalize its PBF strategy and automate the complex compliance reporting scenarios necessary for performance-based funding. The university also needed to comply with Florida’s performance-based funding formulas and receive the top ranking among Florida’s public universities.

Florida Atlantic University is a renowned higher education and research institution located in southeast Florida. The university serves more than 30,000 students and relies on public funding to support its mission. Like many of today’s public colleges, FAU sought to improve and document student outcomes and measures. As a four-year college, FAU was faced with the challenge of meeting the State of Florida's performance-based funding (PBF) objectives, which replaced traditional enrollment metrics with outcome metrics such as graduation rate, employment, and student success in the classroom. The university needed to operationalize its PBF strategy and automate the complex compliance reporting scenarios necessary for performance-based funding.
The Solution
FAU used Information Builders’ WebFOCUS business intelligence (BI) and analytics platform to operationalize its PBF strategy and automate the complex compliance reporting scenarios necessary for performance-based funding. The university implemented WebFOCUS a number of years ago to address legislative mandates for budgeting, planning, and financial reporting. The success of their financial reporting initiative prompted FAU to make WebFOCUS its BI standard across the institution. WebFOCUS has also become extremely useful for financial reporting within the state’s performance metrics. The college developed a complex model to predict student success and foresee issues, allowing faculty and advisors to effectively identify “at-risk” students. FAU’s IT department has created WebFOCUS applications for accounting, admissions, enrollment, and other departments. Being able to access accounts payable, accounts receivable, and an immense amount of information in the college’s financial management system helps administrators comply with governmental reporting guidelines, including those outlined by the Florida Board of Governors.
