The Challenge
The Australian non-profit community service organization, with over 3,500 staff members, was faced with the challenge of securely moving their mission-critical applications and sensitive CRM data to the cloud. They chose Microsoft Azure for its cloud computing infrastructure but needed a robust security solution that offered intelligence, simplicity, and manageability. The traditional approach of the Microsoft cloud using built-in controls of port groups and static firewall rules was not sustainable for the small IT team. The organization also required a solution that could scale with cost-effectiveness. The challenge was to find a security solution that could be integrated with Azure, as many firewall vendors either didn’t have offerings for Azure, couldn’t provide supporting information about integration, or lacked experience in the security industry.
About The Customer
The Australian non-profit is a community service organization that helps people regain their independence. It operates across Australia with more than 3,500 staff members working on initiatives that include affordable housing, reducing homelessness, early learning and youth services, family support, employment, and skills development. The organization had launched the first phase of a cloud-based project designed to improve access to the organization’s CRM application, which contains sensitive data relating specifically to the organization’s clients. The non-profit's Architecture and Engineering teams were tasked with moving applications and data to the cloud and securing them.
The Solution
The organization found the solution in Check Point vSEC for Microsoft Azure. This solution extends security to the Azure cloud infrastructure with a full range of protections delivered by Check Point’s industry-leading threat prevention architecture. It prevents network attacks and data breaches while enabling secure connectivity to Azure public cloud environments. The implementation of Check Point required the organization to change their application design due to the way Azure works. The Check Point team worked closely with the non-profit's team to adapt their application design, bringing in assistance from the global organization. The result was a solid implementation that secures the non-profit's cloud-based assets without exposing its servers on the Internet. The non-profit also achieved its goal of building security centered around users, enabling them to be secure everywhere, on any device, with minimal management or intervention.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Check Point vSEC for Microsoft Azure resulted in several operational benefits for the non-profit. It provided deeper visibility into traffic within Azure, allowing the team to identify traffic with application level granularity, secure it within Azure, and generate reports from within the Azure environment. Check Point Smart Management software consolidates monitoring, logging, and reporting across the Azure cloud and consolidates it with data from the non-profit's on-premises network. This intelligent management gives the IT team the ability to consistently deliver the right level of protection across its cloud and on-premises networks. The organization’s Azure deployment spans two geographical zones, and Check Point vSEC for Azure is mirrored in all locations, providing assurance of high availability as needed. This high availability—without complexity—provides peace of mind for the IT team, knowing that users always have access to the applications and data they need.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Secured user access from all locations, providing flexibility in choice of devices
  • Simplified security management and network flows, reducing provisioning time
  • Achieved high availability and scalability to expand security capacity as the cloud environment grows
