The Challenge
The Fury film editing team faced a significant challenge: they needed to unite editing teams split across Los Angeles and London to cut 1.3 million feet of film for the blockbuster film Fury. Initially, the editing for Fury was planned to take place solely in Los Angeles, across four Avid Media Composer | Ultimate systems. However, six days into the shoot on location in Oxfordshire, England, the producer decided to bring the lead editor, Dody Dorn, to London. This sudden change in plans required a quick and efficient solution to enable seamless collaboration and management of the massive volume of media across the transatlantic. The team also faced the challenge of time constraints, with the need for a fluid, collaborative, and informational flow across the board to keep the entire global team up to date with the latest amendments or notes.
About The Customer
The customer in this case study is the editing team for the blockbuster film Fury, led by Emmy and Academy Award-nominated editor Dody Dorn. Dorn has an impressive list of credits, including working with directors such as Ridley Scott, Baz Luhrmann, and Christopher Nolan on several of their most iconic films. For Fury, Dorn, along with her own cherry-picked army of international editors and assistants, needed a solution that would allow them to collaborate and manage a massive volume of media across two continents. The team was initially based in Los Angeles but had to quickly adapt when Dorn was called to London six days into the shoot. The team faced the challenge of time constraints and the need for a fluid, collaborative, and informational flow across the board.
The Solution
The solution was to implement an integrated video-production, workflow-powered Media Composer | Ultimate system. This system enabled editor Dody Dorn and her team to easily collaborate and manage huge volumes of media across the transatlantic. The seamless workflow, comprising 16 Avid Media Composer | Ultimate software systems, was deployed across two continents to enable 24/7 collaborative editing. To maximize productivity, Dorn and her team continued to maintain four separate yet perfectly synced suites; the UK edit 'container', the LA editing room, the portable Avid, and another editor's home system. The MediaCentral platform enabled real-time remote collaboration, allowing Dorn and her team to easily manage the huge volume across the transatlantic Media Composer workflow. The LA team would do the work, email the bins to the UK team, and then in the morning, the UK team would organize all the dailies.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Avid Media Composer | Ultimate system resulted in a seamless workflow that allowed the Fury editing team to overcome the challenges of time constraints and geographical separation. The system's flexibility allowed for a fluid, collaborative, and informational flow across the board, keeping the entire global team up to date with the latest amendments or notes. The MediaCentral platform enabled real-time remote collaboration, allowing the team to easily manage the huge volume of media across the transatlantic. The team was able to maintain productivity and deliver the film on time, despite the sudden change in plans and the vast amount of footage they had to work through. The success of this project demonstrates the effectiveness of Avid's industry-leading creative tools and processes in facilitating collaborative film editing across multiple locations.
