The Challenge
The post-production team for the American Race documentary, led by supervisor Tim Cunningham, faced a significant challenge. They needed a workflow with ample storage and collaborative capabilities to manage the post-production needs of a fast-paced episodic documentary. The documentary, hosted by Charles Barkley, was a four-part series exploring race in America, with each episode examining different contemporary race issues. The production involved extensive live footage, requiring hours in the editing room and significant storage requirements. This put immense pressure on the post-production team to ensure all technical and artistic components came together for a compelling story. The team also faced a tight production schedule due to the show’s airdate, adding to the challenge.
About The Customer
The customer in this case is the post-production team for the American Race documentary, led by supervisor Tim Cunningham. The team was responsible for managing the post-production needs of the fast-paced, four-part episodic documentary exploring race in America. The documentary was hosted by Charles Barkley, an Emmy® Award-winning basketball analyst, and aired on TNT in May 2017. The team was part of LA-based Doc Shop Productions, a company formed by Emmy Award-winning producer Dan Partland to focus on premium nonfiction content. The team had previously worked on the critically acclaimed and long-running TV documentary Intervention.
The Solution
To address these challenges, the post-production team integrated Media Composer with Avid NEXIS storage for nearline and editorial functions. This solution enabled them to manage massive amounts of high-resolution footage and collaborate freely to create the documentary. Avid Media Composer allowed the team to cut each episode with ease and speed, offering native support for all media formats and facilitating flawless collaboration. Avid NEXIS, the industry’s first software-defined storage platform, provided the necessary storage capacity of up to 60 terabytes. The workflow relied heavily on the size and speed of NEXIS storage to meet tight network deadlines. Avid NEXIS | E2 was used for editorial and 'heavy footage', while Avid NEXIS | PRO was used for nearline functions, enabling multiple editors to access files for a scalable and secure real-time workflow.

Predictive Maintenance for Industrial Chillers
For global leaders in the industrial chiller manufacturing, reliability of the entire production process is of the utmost importance. Chillers are refrigeration systems that produce ice water to provide cooling for a process or industrial application. One of those leaders sought a way to respond to asset performance issues, even before they occur. The intelligence to guarantee maximum reliability of cooling devices is embedded (pre-alarming). A pre-alarming phase means that the cooling device still works, but symptoms may appear, telling manufacturers that a failure is likely to occur in the near future. Chillers who are not internet connected at that moment, provide little insight in this pre-alarming phase.
