The Challenge
The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences (CRAS) in Arizona, a highly regarded audio recording, sound engineering, and music production school, faced a challenge with its outdated live analog console. The existing system was aging and lacked the ability to network with other classrooms or integrate with the existing Pro Tools setup. The school needed a modern system that could provide students with real-world training and experience, and seamlessly integrate with the existing infrastructure. The challenge was to find a solution that offered excellent sound quality, proven reliability, and advanced workflows, while also being user-friendly for the students.
About The Customer
The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences (CRAS) is a highly regarded audio recording, sound engineering, and music production school located in Arizona. Over the past three decades, it has become one of the most respected institutions in the country in its field. The school is known for its small class sizes and highly qualified instructors, creating a supportive environment where students learn the technologies and workflows they need for successful audio careers. The school's curriculum incorporates a wide variety of subjects, and its sound reinforcement course is one of the most popular. The school's primary goal is to provide each graduate with the skills necessary to launch a prosperous career.
The Solution
CRAS chose the Avid VENUE D-Show System with MADI and HDx cards as the solution to their challenge. This system was selected for its excellent sound quality, proven reliability, and advanced workflows. The D-Show System features Avid VENUE software, which allows for seamless Pro Tools integration. The system at CRAS consists of a 24-fader D-Show console D-Show Sidecar, a 48-input Stage Rack, and Avid VENUE FOH Rack. The latter is loaded with an HDx Option Card for easy integration with the conservatory’s existing Pro Tools | HD systems. The VENUE system's flexibility, intuitive user interface, and easy learning curve help students hone a highly marketable skill set that reflects the demands of today's market.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Avid VENUE D-Show System has significantly expanded the curriculum at CRAS. The system's recall capabilities and Virtual Soundcheck feature, along with its tight Pro Tools integration, have been cited as critical advantages for the conservatory’s training efforts. The system allows students to do their own setups, save them as sessions, and recall them on the board later. It also enables the recording of both local and remote band clinics, passing audio between several different classrooms. This provides optimal hands-on experience under real-world conditions and ensures that the students have easy access to a constantly refreshed and easily retrievable library multitrack. The on-board plugins of the VENUE system also reduce hardware expenses and space requirements for the conservatory, while providing students with direct access to a large library of different sounds and processor options.
