The Challenge
Bank of Hawaii, a financial institution with more than 70 locations across Hawaii, West Pacific and American Samoa, started exploring ways to reduce energy use in 2011. The bank's management was focused on driving value and maximizing the use of its environment, which included identifying savings opportunities. When energy prices spiked, the bank earnestly sought ways to cut back. They began making changes across the board to reduce energy usage, starting with facilities and operations adjustments, such as lighting and air conditioning upgrades. Then, Bank of Hawaii began evaluating IT energy management tools. However, a trial run of an initial IT energy management tool failed due to issues with the software, making the IT team skeptical about the investment.
About The Customer
Bank of Hawaii is a financial institution with more than 70 locations across Hawaii, West Pacific and American Samoa. The bank's management has always been focused on driving value and maximizing the use of its environment. This includes identifying savings opportunities whenever they may arise. When energy prices spiked, the bank earnestly sought ways to cut back. They began making changes across the board to reduce energy usage, starting with facilities and operations adjustments, such as lighting and air conditioning upgrades. Then, Bank of Hawaii began evaluating IT energy management tools. This effort was supported all the way to the top at Bank of Hawaii as the bank’s Chairman and CEO, Peter Ho, was involved and supportive of this review.
The Solution
Despite the initial setback, the IT team at Bank of Hawaii didn't give up and got a recommendation to investigate Verdiem Surveyor. After initial testing to identify the potential savings Surveyor could offer the bank, the IT team initiated deployment of Verdiem. The Verdiem deployment team supported the bank every step of the way. The bank was specifically looking for an energy management solution that would allow users to wake their computers remotely, as more than 400 employees use remote access to do their jobs. Surveyor provides Bank of Hawaii staff with a web portal by which they can wake and access their desktops during off hours. The IT team at Bank of Hawaii implemented other power policies that put inactive computers to sleep when offices close at the end of the business day. Computers wake for a short period in the middle of the night for mandatory maintenance and security upgrades, and then wake again when offices open each new business day.
Operational Impact
  • The bank experienced a reduction in energy usage by an average of 40.7 percent across all of its locations.
  • The bank was able to implement power policies that put inactive computers to sleep when offices close at the end of the business day.
  • Computers wake for a short period in the middle of the night for mandatory maintenance and security upgrades, and then wake again when offices open each new business day.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The bank estimates saving approximately $158,400 in energy costs this year alone.
