The Challenge
In a highly competitive market, BGL Life needed to analyze product performance and make agile changes to their customer journeys to improve performance. They set up their own SQL enterprise data warehouse (EDW) to pull information from various systems and wrote their own quote and pricing rules. However, the daily extraction of data was insufficient for the business to be responsive. It took two hours a day to extract and format data for Management Information (MI), which was not efficient. The team needed a new BI and analytics tool to address these challenges.
About The Customer
BGL Group is a leading digital distributor of insurance and household financial services. It operates price comparison services like comparethemarket.com in the UK and LesFurets.com in France. BGL offers home, motor, and life insurance through brands such as Budget Insurance, Dial Direct, Beagle Street, and FiftyLife. Additionally, it provides white-labeled insurance solutions to some of the UK's most trusted brands. BGL Life, a part of BGL Group, aims to make life insurance simple and accessible to everyone in the UK, supporting brands like Beaglestreet.com and FiftyLife, and distributing life products directly to consumers and through price comparison sites.
The Solution
BGL Life evaluated six BI vendors based on recommendations from Group and the Gartner Magic Quadrant. They chose Yellowfin after a six-week selection process and a PoC with three vendors. Yellowfin's feature set, including 'export to Excel' and the ability to automate reports, was crucial. Before rolling out Yellowfin, the team conducted penetration testing and implemented single sign-on, rules to kick inactive users out after 15 minutes, and two-factor authentication for secure access. Approximately fifty people across various teams now use Yellowfin, benefiting from comprehensive reports and dashboards that track key trends and performance metrics.
Operational Impact
  • Yellowfin provides complete visibility of performance, allowing immediate issue identification and resolution.
  • Regular performance meetings no longer need to be led by the MI Team, saving each team approximately one day a week.
  • Offering embedded white-labeled reporting with two-factor authentication has been well received by affinity partners.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Each team saves approximately one day a week by not needing to pull together reports and analysis in Excel.
