The Challenge
Boise Cascade, one of North America’s largest producers of engineered wood products and plywood, faced a significant challenge in their operations. The company had poor visibility into millions of dollars in annual rebates and lacked the ability to visualize data from sales, production, inventory, and other key business functions. The company also wanted analytics capabilities to more accurately track more than $30 million in annual rebates that the company pays out to its customers and dealers. Accountants were using an Excel-based system for tracking the rebates and couldn’t get fine-grained analytics to determine if the rebates provided actual value to everyone involved. The company needed a solution that would provide them with the necessary insights and analytics to improve their operations.
About The Customer
Boise Cascade is one of North America’s largest producers of engineered wood products and plywood. The company is also a distributor of building materials. The company has been providing BC Connect, a web-based portal to its customers. The portal provides valuable information to customers about building projects, design specifications, and material lists – along with key product metrics for internal personnel. However, BC Connect lacked an analytics and business intelligence (BI) component that allowed people to easily examine and visualize information. The company also pays out tens of millions of dollars in rebates every year to its customers and dealers.
The Solution
Boise Cascade decided to implement Information Builders' software solutions to address their challenges. The company developed a customer rebate InfoApp using Information Builders’ software. This InfoApp helped the company determine if the rebates and allowances made sense and provided value to the company. The company also created a profitability analysis dashboard that used Information Builders’ In-Document Analytics to package a portable data set with a customized application. This allowed users to visualize their data in unique ways without requiring them to install specialized software. Another InfoApp was created to bring analytical and BI capabilities to Boise Cascade’s data-intensive SawTek operation. This allowed the company to monitor the usage and efficiency of the saws by location, dealer, customer, location, shift, and other variables. The company also used iWay Software solutions to continually refresh the data in the InfoApps and Active Reports.
