The Challenge
Magna Steyr, a leading brand-independent engineering and manufacturing partner for OEMs, was facing a challenge with its workflow automation. Over the years, the company had introduced more than ten different automated processes, which were touching almost every part of its business. These processes were supported by a mix of different commercial and bespoke software packages. While these automated processes had been supporting the business well, the time had come to move to a single workflow technology. The company needed a workflow automation solution that could gradually replace and enhance its existing automated processes, and also create new business workflows.
About The Customer
Magna Steyr is a world-leading brand-independent engineering and manufacturing partner for OEMs with over 100 years of experience in vehicle production. The company provides a wide range of services including engineering services, vehicle contract manufacturing, and innovative fuel systems. It has over 159,000 employees and has produced more than 3.7 million vehicles representing 29 different models. Magna Steyr's products are found on most vehicles today and come from 347 manufacturing operations and 94 product development, engineering, and sales centers in 27 countries.
The Solution
Magna Steyr decided to standardize on K2 Software for workflow automation after a competitive review process. This allowed the company’s IT team to spend less time managing and maintaining workflows and focus more on developing new solutions. One of the first workflows implemented was the company’s change management process. Now, whenever an amendment is proposed to the design of an automotive component or stage in production, a change request workflow is automatically initiated. Another time-saving workflow streamlined the company’s order management process. Magna Steyr also used K2 Software to create a flexible workflow generation engine called Free Flow, which allows employees to design and initiate their own automated processes on an ad hoc basis.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of K2 Software has brought significant operational benefits to Magna Steyr. The company’s new workflows save time and improve employee productivity. The company estimates that it can now process purchase orders and issue them to suppliers up to 90% more quickly than before. The integration of K2 Software and Microsoft Active Directory has made workflows accessible to 3,000 employees. The company’s IT department now spends far less time managing and maintaining workflow systems and can focus their energy on developing new workflows that will add value for the business.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 90% faster delivery of purchase orders
  • One standardized tool for process automation
  • Enabled the creation of over 50 workflows using Free Flow
