The Challenge
Bridgewater Bank, a Canadian chartered bank based in Calgary, Alberta, was facing a challenge with its reporting system. The bank was dealing with an influx of data from various parts of the enterprise, including finance, operations, marketing, regulatory, core banking, and mortgage lending. The existing reporting environment was inconsistent and lacked the ability to drill into the data or visualize it on interactive displays. This led to conflicting terminology in reports, causing confusion and misinterpretation. The bank needed a new analytic system that could encourage collaboration, help managers monitor KPIs, and enforce consistency in the data shared among business units.
About The Customer
Bridgewater Bank is a Canadian Schedule I chartered bank based in Calgary, Alberta. The bank is wholly owned by the Alberta Motor Association (AMA). Bridgewater Bank specializes in competitive residential mortgages and deposit products through a select network of brokers. The bank has a $2.85 billion portfolio representing more than 39,000 accounts across Canada. Bridgewater Bank’s IT leaders were aware that the organization suffered from reporting inconsistency and were looking for an enterprise-level BI solution. While managers could create summary-level reports, it was difficult to drill into the data or visualize it on interactive displays.
The Solution
Bridgewater Bank decided to implement Information Builders’ WebFOCUS, a versatile business intelligence (BI) and analytic solution. The bank used WebFOCUS to standardize its BI activities and create analytic portals tailored to specific business domains. This self-service BI environment guides employees as they make day-to-day decisions, and even offers a measure of strategic foresight. The bank developed a dozen analytic portals using WebFOCUS, AppStudio, and Portal. These portals accurately display data through maps, charts, and InfoApps, enabling users to easily monitor whether key performance indicators are trending up or trending down. The bank also used Information Builders’ flexible mapping technology to visualize threatened Bridgewater assets by overlaying geo-location data about mortgages with the Forest Service’s dynamic wildfire schematic. This insight allowed Bridgewater to monitor its exposure throughout the catastrophe, inform post-fire mitigation plans, and create accurate status reports for its parent company.
Operational Impact
  • Greater confidence in the data drives knowledgeable decisions about cash flow, funding ratios, and reserves, minimizing risk and maximizing profitability in the highly competitive consumer-banking sector.
  • The overall ease and flexibility of WebFOCUS helps everybody in the organization get behind the bank’s analytic initiatives.
  • The rapid penetration and use of these analytic assets within Bridgewater’s employee population far exceeds the 10 percent average that is typical of most BI deployments.
