The Challenge
Arzeda needed a more efficient and less error-prone method to construct plasmids for producing designer proteins. The existing process was slow, resource-intensive, and prone to errors. The company faced a choice: either hire additional personnel to develop a new solution from scratch or integrate proven technologies from trusted vendors into a seamless, high-throughput DNA assembly platform.
About The Customer
Arzeda is a biotechnology company that designs and creates proteins for various industries, including life sciences, food, and chemicals. The company focuses on delivering important molecules by testing thousands of protein-producing plasmids. Arzeda aims to provide cost-effective and sustainable production of value-added specialty chemicals and ingredients. The company leverages computational protein design to build novel enzymes and develop new pathways, unlocking new opportunities for specialty chemicals, advanced materials, and health and nutrition products.
The Solution
Arzeda opted to integrate proven technologies from trusted vendors to create a seamless, high-throughput DNA assembly platform. They combined Twist Bioscience’s high-quality DNA fragments, TeselaGen’s DNA assembly design and laboratory automation software, and Labcyte’s Echo Liquid Handler. This integrated solution increased productivity, reduced consumable use, generated more accurate plasmid designs, and lowered costs. Twist Bioscience’s silicon-based DNA synthesis platform quickly and affordably produced high-quality synthetic DNA, which Arzeda combined into plasmids using sophisticated DNA assembly methods. TeselaGen’s software automated the process of DNA assembly, determining the best way to put plasmids together and which DNA fragments should be synthesized by Twist. The Labcyte Echo Liquid Handler used sound waves to move nanoliter-sized liquid droplets, making the process more efficient and reducing costs.
Operational Impact
  • The integrated platform allowed Arzeda to increase the number of enzymes built and tested by about 10x.
  • The process became more predictable, reducing the time spent reworking plasmids and minimizing wasted design and synthesis time.
  • The Echo Liquid Handler’s use of sound waves for liquid transfer eliminated the need for pipettes, reducing the risk of cross-contamination and saving on disposables.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Arzeda expects to increase efficiency to a hundredfold by the end of 2019.
  • The integrated platform allowed Arzeda to increase the number of enzymes built and tested by about 10x.
