The Challenge
Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik (HBM) faced the challenge of creating transparency along global supply chains to minimize risks, secure production, and ensure profitability. They needed to address three key questions: the risk associated with each supplier, the influence of each supplier on profitability, and how to create transparency to prevent production crippling due to supplier defaults. Initially, HBM used extensive Excel lists to collect and prepare risk and supplier data, but as risks and data volumes increased, this method became inadequate. A new, innovative solution was required to integrate data throughout the organization and ensure optimal use of risk information for preventive actions.
About The Customer
Since 1950, Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik (HBM) has been synonymous with leading-edge measuring technology, known for reliability and precision worldwide. HBM's product range covers the entire measurement chain, providing solutions for determining both electrical and mechanical parameters. The company employs 1800 staff across four production sites in Darmstadt (headquarters), Porto, Marlborough (Massachusetts, USA), and Suzhou (Jiangsu, China), along with 31 additional sales and development centers. HBM operates in areas such as measuring amplifiers for the research industry, strain gages, sensors and transducers, load cells, and evaluation and analysis software.
The Solution
HBM adopted an all-inclusive approach to monitor key suppliers using riskmethods' Supply Risk Network. This cloud-based SaaS solution allows HBM to monitor suppliers, locations, countries, and hubs for various risks, including natural disasters, strikes, and compliance breaches. The Supply Risk Network provides a world map view of all risk objects and the entire flow of goods along the supply chain. HBM also developed an evaluation matrix to analyze the impact of each supplier, using the riskmethods 'Impact Validator' module to reconcile their evaluation matrix with advanced technology. This combination of risk information and criticality data helps HBM identify suppliers requiring preventive measures. Additionally, HBM introduced a set of measures for critical suppliers, including setting up alternative suppliers and stockpiling products. HBM plans to extend the use of the Supply Risk Network to other departments, aiming to establish it as standard software for all supplier-related functions.
Operational Impact
  • The riskmethods Supply Risk Network offers HBM a cloud-based software solution with daily, up-to-date data on all risks for all suppliers, production sites, and countries.
  • Ongoing risk monitoring, an early warning system, impact evaluation, and action planning ensure that risks are more easily recognized and the extent of damage minimized.
  • HBM ensures its profitability and increases its competitive advantage by proactively addressing supply chain risks.
Quantitative Benefit
  • HBM monitors 120 global suppliers and subcontractors using the Supply Risk Network.
  • The Supply Risk Network monitors more than 300,000 online sources in near real-time.
  • HBM employs 1800 staff across four production sites and 31 additional sales and development centers.
