The Challenge
IPM Group, a Belgian media company, faced challenges with their high-traffic websites. The company's websites needed to be visually appealing, easy to navigate, fast, and reliable. They also had to handle unexpected traffic spikes, such as after significant news events. The company's existing IT infrastructure was designed for static, text-based content, which resulted in slow page load times and occasional unavailability. The company needed a solution that could improve page load times and manage traffic spikes without incurring prohibitive costs.
About The Customer
IPM Group is a Belgian media company with two flagship newspapers: La Libre Belgique and La Dernière Heure/Les Sports. The company also publishes several magazines and operates a radio station that covers all of French-speaking Belgium. The company's websites are high-traffic platforms where people visit to get insight on breaking news as it happens. The content on these websites is continuously updated and enriched with photos, illustrations, and videos. The company's IT architecture needs to be fast and reliable to ensure seamless navigation across the website and instant page loading.
The Solution
IPM Group considered several options, including increasing the bandwidth and power of their hosted servers. However, the costs quickly became prohibitive. CDNetworks proposed their content delivery network solution, designed specifically to accelerate the display of website content. The solution stores the biggest components of a website’s content in cache on CDNetworks servers. The content is then delivered to the website on demand through the most efficient path, using a smart selection process from the server. The result is an extremely rapid response time. After testing and adapting the rules for optimal rendering, the company switched over to the new system.
Operational Impact
  • Web pages began loading almost instantly, improving the user experience.
  • The company was able to streamline its IT infrastructure without having to increase its bandwidth or install new servers.
  • The company now has modern, attractive websites that showcase their journalists’ skills with sophisticated photos, illustrations, and videos.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The company was able to handle an influx of traffic from foreign users, which can increase visitor numbers by a factor of ten.
  • The company added a third website (containing real estate ads) to the system in under a week.
