The Challenge
The City of Franklin, Tennessee, faced significant challenges in their solid waste and streets departments due to rapid population growth. The public works department struggled with inefficient route planning, relying on outdated methods such as paper maps, GPS, Excel spreadsheets, and driver knowledge. This inefficiency led to increased fuel and labor costs, missed pickups, and frustrated residents. The streets department also faced issues with inconsistent service and an inability to provide timely street sweeping services, further exacerbated by the city's rapid growth.
About The Customer
The City of Franklin, Tennessee, is a rapidly growing city located 20 miles south of Nashville. Named after Benjamin Franklin, it is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Franklin has a population of 83,454, making it the seventh largest city in Tennessee. The city's rapid growth has significantly impacted its public works department, necessitating the need for efficient route planning solutions to manage the increasing number of residents and their waste collection and street sweeping needs.
The Solution
To address these challenges, the City of Franklin implemented RouteSmart for solid waste collection route planning. This solution allowed the city to optimize route plans, balance workloads, and provide specific daily routes for residential collection. The city also consolidated its residential routes to a four-day work week from five. Following the success in the solid waste department, the streets department adopted RouteSmart to improve street sweeping operations, reducing the street sweep cycle from seven weeks to three weeks. Additionally, the city deployed RouteSmart Navigator, an onboard navigation system created by RouteSmart partner Integrated Skills Limited. This system tracked and reported activity, provided turn-by-turn instructions to drivers, and improved customer experience and staff oversight.
