The Challenge
Coats, a global leader in thread manufacturing and structural components, needed a way to manage health and safety across its global business. The company's Journey to Zero strategy aimed to create a comprehensive global safety culture, but the demands of collecting and managing data across the organization were consuming significant resources. Before implementing Intelex, Coats relied on manual data entry and spreadsheets for tracking actions, which was time-consuming and prone to errors. The company needed a technology platform that could support its safety culture at every location worldwide and streamline the reporting and approval process involved with incidents and actions.
About The Customer
Coats is a world leader in thread manufacturing and structural components for apparel and footwear. The company, which dates back to the eighteenth century, has grown into a FTSE250 company with over 17,000 employees on six continents. Coats provides threads for everything from conventional apparel to safety-critical products like automotive airbags and hot air balloons. The company's mission is to connect talent, textiles, and technology for a better, more sustainable world. The health and safety of its employees is a top priority for Coats, and the company's Journey to Zero strategy is an approach to creating a comprehensive global safety culture that makes the entire organization a safe place to work for every employee.
The Solution
To support its Journey to Zero strategy, Coats turned to Intelex for data solutions and structured safety workflows. The company implemented several Intelex applications, including EHS Incident Management and Behaviour-Based Safety, as well as several environmental applications to support its sustainability goals. The Intelex Incident Management application has played an essential role in supporting the new global safety culture by streamlining the reporting and approval process involved with incidents and actions. The application has helped reduce the amount of single-paged documents created for each incident and has completely eliminated the spreadsheets Coats maintained for tracking actions. The application has also given the leadership team visibility into the current scenarios and incidents at individual sites, all within Intelex.
Operational Impact
  • Intelex has been a key technology element of Coats’ Journey to Zero strategy, contributing to successful results like seamless reporting and visibility of incidents, which allows stakeholders to get insights into planning the annual global safety initiatives.
  • The leading and lagging indicator dashboards that were set up in the system allow users at multiple levels of the organisation to track their performance and rapidly identify any areas of concern.
  • The performance improvements have been particularly noticeable across the global organisation. The company can easily compare data across different areas of the business, such as geography or divisional structure.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Near misses reporting rate: +33%
  • Hazard reporting rate: +36%
  • Improvement actions completed rate: +55%
