The Challenge
Cloverleaf Cold Storage, a large cold storage warehouse company, was facing challenges with their incumbent HID lamps in their 24/7 facility. The heat generated from these lamps was causing issues in the cold storage freezers, as the facility team had to compensate for the heat to maintain optimal temperatures. Additionally, the company was looking to improve the lighting in their facility to create a safer environment for their employees. They were also interested in integrating an advanced control system for monitoring.
About The Customer
Cloverleaf Cold Storage is a company that has been offering public and contract storage in refrigerated, frozen, and dry environments for over 60 years. They are the 11th largest cold storage warehouse company in the world and the 8th largest in North America. The company operates 21 facilities throughout North America. The Columbus, OH location, which is the focus of this case study, is a 300,000 square foot cold storage warehouse. The company operates 24/7 and was looking to reduce energy consumption, improve lighting, and integrate an advanced control system for monitoring.
The Solution
To address the challenges, Cloverleaf Cold Storage, with the assistance of Keen Technical Solutions, an ESCO company, decided to upgrade their lighting system. They selected the Flex Lighting Solutions Essential Series LED high bays with an integrated control system. The Essential Series 4.0 LED high bay is rated for ambient operating temperatures ranging from minimum -40°C (-40°F) to maximum 65°C (149°F), making it suitable for the cold storage application. The LED high bays feature rotatable outer modules to optimize the light distribution and provide flexibility for any application. This allowed Cloverleaf to properly illuminate both the aisles and racking areas within their facility. The control system installed throughout the facility allowed managers to monitor and control the system, contributing to immediate energy savings.
Operational Impact
  • The new lighting system created a safer, more energy-efficient working environment.
  • The advanced control system allowed managers to monitor and control the system, contributing to immediate energy savings.
  • The LED high bays feature rotatable outer modules allowed for proper illumination of both the aisles and racking areas within the facility.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 90% Energy Savings
  • 824,224 Annual kWh Saved
  • 1 Year Payback
