The Challenge
Comcast Corporation, a leading media, entertainment, and communications company, was faced with the challenge of transitioning its network and services from IPv4 to IPv6. This transition was necessitated by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) distributing the last five blocks of IPv4 addresses to the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). Comcast had to ensure the technological readiness of its entire network and service infrastructure, including core network readiness, support for IPv6 across the back-office systems, and access network IPv6 readiness.
About The Customer
Comcast Corporation is one of the world’s leading media, entertainment, and communications companies. Based in the U.S., Comcast has approximately 27 million video subscribers, 17 million high-speed data subscribers, and six million digital voice subscribers. The company has been preparing for and implementing IPv6 over the last six years. Comcast has been considered a pioneer in the deployment of IPv6.
The Solution
Comcast used its existing Arbor Peakflow SP solution to collect and analyze NetFlow data for visibility into its IPv4 and IPv6 network traffic. The Peakflow SP solution was a key piece of the IPv6 program at Comcast, ensuring that the company’s network management, monitoring, and reporting tools supported IPv6. Peakflow SP allowed network operators to leverage IP flow technology embedded in network routers and switches to gain visibility into native and tunneled IPv6 traffic traversing their networks. Comcast used Peakflow SP on a daily basis to report on and understand various traffic patterns as they related to the introduction of IPv6 into the company’s network.
Operational Impact
  • Gained visibility into both native IPv6 and tunneled IPv6 traffic on its network.
  • Enabled daily reporting and understanding of various traffic patterns related to the introduction of IPv6 into the company’s network.
  • Provided understanding of the various transition technologies ranging from 6to4, Teredo and other types of tunneling protocols around the Comcast network.
