The Challenge
Connexus Energy, Minnesota's largest electric cooperative, faced significant challenges in protecting its Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Industrial Control System (ICS) networks from cyber threats. With the rise of smart grids, smart devices, and IoT devices, traditional SCADA and ICS systems often lacked the necessary security controls to defend against sophisticated cyber attackers. Connexus Energy was using multiple security solutions from different vendors, each with specific management requirements, consuming a significant amount of the team’s technical resources. The security team had to parse logs from different systems to identify issues and respond accurately. Furthermore, secure gateways for the SCADA system had to operate in extreme physical conditions, and many of Connexus Energy's existing security solutions were not ruggedized or only partially ruggedized. The challenge was to find a solution that could protect the SCADA system while delivering centralized visibility across the entire security environment.
About The Customer
Connexus Energy is based in Ramsey, Minnesota, and is the largest electric cooperative in the state. It provides electricity and services to member residents and businesses across seven counties north of Minneapolis. The company serves more than 130,000 members and has become a significant target for cyber attackers and malicious nation-states aiming to disrupt vital services. Connexus Energy relies on SCADA and ICS networks to control and monitor devices and data across their distribution networks. As the adoption of smart grids, smart devices, and IoT devices increases, the company faces the challenge of ensuring the security of these traditional systems against sophisticated cyber threats.
The Solution
Connexus Energy conducted a full RFP to evaluate solutions from existing vendors and Check Point solutions. They chose Check Point for its single-pane-of-glass management, suite of integrated solutions, and additional capabilities such as historical logging and unified policy management. Connexus Energy deployed Check Point 15400 Next Generation Security Gateways for its core security gateway, Check Point 3600 Security Appliances for the SCADA network, Check Point 3200 Next Generation Security Gateways at multiple remote sites, and Check Point 1200R rugged appliances for its ICS at all substations. The Check Point 1200R, a solid-state appliance, protects all critical operational systems. Additionally, Check Point solutions provided Connexus Energy with a Compliance Software Blade, which highlights configuration errors, identifies security weaknesses, and validates changes in real time.
Operational Impact
  • The deployment of Check Point solutions has resulted in high availability and reliability across Connexus Energy's integrated security infrastructure. The Check Point 1200R operates regardless of environmental conditions, saving time for the team. The unified security management console allows team members to view everything in one place, accelerating troubleshooting and threat investigation. The Check Point solutions also enabled Connexus Energy to completely replace its previous desktop security solution. Furthermore, with the help of the Check Point Incident Response team, Connexus Energy was able to develop a robust incident response plan, increasing cyber awareness across all levels of the organization and structuring a comprehensive cyber incident response plan.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduced the number of non-responding endpoints from over 30 to just four within a week of deploying Check Point.
  • Enabled the security team to push unified policy out to hundreds of devices in the field.
  • Provided a single-pane-of-glass management system, eliminating the need to parse logs from different systems.
