The Challenge
Costain, a large and complex organization operating across various industries, faced a significant challenge in managing risk effectively. The company needed to ensure that senior leaders had access to accurate, up-to-date data from each project to confirm that all areas were performing as expected. As part of several joint ventures, Costain had to demonstrate adherence to the highest possible standards. Employee wellbeing was also a major concern, with a focus on protecting both the mental and physical health of employees. The previous solution, while meeting initial requirements, needed a refresh due to advances in technology and evolving business demands. The goal was to add more depth to the data captured and ensure every possible finding was identified and followed up.
About The Customer
Costain is a UK-based company that provides smart infrastructure solutions across the country's energy, water, transportation, and defence sectors. The company employs around 3,400 people and is one of the UK’s Top 100 Most Admired companies. Costain is committed to improving lives and has built a strong reputation for its high-quality work. The company is part of several joint ventures and is known for working to the highest possible standards. Employee wellbeing is a major concern for Costain, and the company takes every effort to protect both the mental and physical health of its employees.
The Solution
Costain decided to change the perception around recording inspections, believing that some events might be going unreported due to employees' reluctance, fearing it might reflect negatively on their work. The company revised the design of the 'SHE Assurance Review' module and changed the scoring criteria. The new module captures more detail and offers enhanced reporting capability, allowing Costain to manage the SHE Assurance risk library internally with a dedicated module. Working with their Customer Success Manager and the Info Exchange Delivery Team, Costain integrated it into a single portal, known as 'Capture', which holds all the risk data for the organization and joint venture projects. This portal allows over 1,200 employees to access the information easily and quickly, with over 700 able to run reports to get the information they need. Senior leaders have clear sight of all the data they require in easy-to-read dashboards, enabling them to act decisively to address any concerns and reinforce good performance.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the new SHE Assurance module has led to positive feedback from employees, reflected in the increased activity on the system. The enhanced efficiency and actions tracking allowed for the rapid implementation of an improvement plan to rectify a major action, thereby minimizing risks. The new system has not only increased the number of incidents, injuries, hazards, positive observations, and inspections reported but also improved the speed at which actions required to make improvements are taken. This has driven a culture of best practice within the organization, with employees more engaged with the health, safety, and environment agenda, focusing on working in a safe and sustainable way. Senior leaders now have greater confidence that potential risks are being spotted and addressed effectively.
Quantitative Benefit
  • In the first six months of the new SHE Assurance module being live, 790 actions were identified, compared to 327 actions using the old module in the previous six months.
  • More than 1,200 employees have access to the new system and over 700 can run reports to get the information they need.
  • Only one major action was identified due to the enhanced efficiency and actions tracking.
