The Challenge
ROJO Architecture faced the challenge of transforming a large, open retail space into a functional and welcoming orthopedic care facility for the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. The space lacked privacy and natural light, which were essential for the medical facility. Additionally, the entryway needed to be inviting to create a positive first impression for patients and employees. Another project involved converting a small lot into a 12-story affordable housing building in St. Petersburg, Florida. The challenge was to optimize the space, including three levels of parking, while maintaining an upscale, modern design that defied typical affordable housing aesthetics.
About The Customer
ROJO Architecture is a design firm based in Tampa, Florida, co-founded by Rob Glisson and John Saldana. The firm consists of a team of nine architects who serve a diverse range of clients, including medical, religious, commercial, hospitality, and private-sector clients. ROJO Architecture is known for its collaborative approach and focus on end-user needs, which allows them to create spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The firm is an early adopter of technology, utilizing Vectorworks Architect software for Building Information Modeling (BIM) to enhance their design and presentation capabilities.
The Solution
ROJO Architecture employed Vectorworks Architect software as a Building Information Modeling (BIM) tool to design the orthopedic care facility for the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. The software allowed them to model the design in detail, facilitating client approvals and reducing backend work. The design included a welcoming entryway with a glass wall and cascading waterfall, sophisticated carpeting, wood-lined walls, and modern industrial lighting. For the affordable housing project, ROJO used the same software to explore different design scenarios, optimizing the space and ensuring smooth approval processes. The building featured reclaimed barn wood, modern furniture, and sculptural rose cutouts, creating an upscale, modern tone.
Operational Impact
  • The use of Vectorworks Architect software allowed ROJO Architecture to model designs in detail, facilitating client approvals and reducing backend work.
  • The software's presentation capabilities enabled smooth approval processes by the State of Florida, the City of St. Petersburg, and a private developer.
  • ROJO's collaborative approach and focus on end-user needs resulted in spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Client meetings are 95 percent successful due to detailed presentations.
  • Precise quantities in BIM models can save 10 percent on wasted materials.
