The Challenge
Max Conwell, founder of Naked Eye Lighting, faced the challenge of evolving lighting technology and the need to create innovative and adaptable designs for high-profile clients in the music industry. As lighting technology advanced, Conwell needed to integrate new tools and techniques, such as video projection and 3D pixel mapping, into his designs. Additionally, the wide range of venues and international tours presented logistical challenges, requiring adaptable and versatile lighting solutions that could be easily modified to meet different requirements.
About The Customer
Naked Eye Lighting, founded by Max Conwell in 2005, is an independent design consultancy based in London, England. The company specializes in lighting design for concerts, fashion shows, events, architectural projects, and television. Conwell, who has a background as a lighting technician, established the company with a client-centric approach, focusing on selecting the right equipment for each project without being tied to specific vendors or suppliers. Naked Eye Lighting has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Morrissey, No Doubt, and Incubus, and has built a reputation for innovative and cutting-edge lighting designs.
The Solution
To address the challenges, Conwell utilized Vectorworks Spotlight software, which offers comprehensive 3D modeling capabilities and interoperability with other software programs. This allowed Conwell to create detailed and adaptable lighting designs that could be easily modified for different venues and international tours. The software's Fixture Replace feature enabled quick swapping of lighting fixtures to meet local requirements. Additionally, Conwell used connectCAD, a Vectorworks add-on, to generate schematic diagrams and layout drawings, ensuring clear communication with technicians and installers. The Lightwright partner product tool facilitated the documentation process, allowing Conwell to generate and reconcile paperwork seamlessly. The integration of these tools enabled Conwell to create innovative lighting designs that incorporated video projection, pixel mapping, and media servers, enhancing the visual experience for both the performers and the audience.
