The Challenge
DB Schenker Logistics, a global leader in transportation and third-party logistics, needed a future-proof e-commerce solution to accommodate the needs of its customer, Lekmer.com, the largest online retailer for children's products in the Nordic countries. The solution had to meet strict e-commerce success criteria, including short response times, effortless return handling, and the elimination of human errors. Additionally, it needed to be adaptable to future customers and product line changes, ensuring flexibility in a constantly changing market.
About The Customer
DB Schenker Logistics is a global leader in transportation and third-party logistics, operating in 140 countries worldwide. The company is known for its strong focus on quality, customer satisfaction, and sustainability. To strengthen its position in the e-commerce sector, DB Schenker has invested in innovative, future-proof technology. One such investment is the CarryPick solution, installed in its Swedish facility near Stockholm. This solution was specifically implemented to meet the needs of Lekmer.com, the largest online retailer for children's products in the Nordic countries. DB Schenker's goal was to provide a scalable, flexible, and efficient logistics solution that could adapt to the evolving demands of e-commerce.
The Solution
DB Schenker partnered with Swisslog to implement the CarryPick solution, part of Swisslog's Click&Pick® portfolio designed for retail applications. CarryPick is a goods-to-person solution consisting of three modules: a Mobile Rack, a Mobile Robot (Carry), and a Workstation. The Mobile Racks are transported by the automated Carries to the Workstations, allowing for easy scalability and minimal construction work during installation. The Mobile Robots navigate using barcodes on the floor and are equipped with lifting and turn-on-the-spot technology. They offer unique redundancy by automatically charging themselves inductively, ensuring 24/7 operation. The Workstations centralize picking, packing, replenishment, and returns, coordinated by Swisslog's software, which interfaces with the customer's ERP system. This modular design allows DB Schenker to easily adapt to market changes and customer demands, making it a future-proof solution for e-commerce logistics.
Operational Impact
  • The CarryPick solution provided DB Schenker with a scalable and flexible logistics system that could easily adapt to changes in the market and customer demands.
  • The Mobile Robots' unique redundancy and automatic charging capabilities ensured continuous 24/7 operation, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity.
  • The centralized Workstations streamlined the picking, packing, replenishment, and returns processes, guided by an easy-to-follow pick-by-light system.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The CarryPick solution allowed DB Schenker to accommodate Lekmer.com's e-commerce needs with minimal construction work, reducing installation time and costs.
  • The automated Mobile Robots' 24/7 operation and inductive charging reduced downtime, increasing overall productivity.
  • The modular design of CarryPick enabled DB Schenker to easily upscale or downscale the system, providing cost savings compared to manual systems.
