The Challenge
Laptops are allowing students and faculty to become more mobile. The use of physical deterrents is no longer adequate, and Kwantlen needs to reduce the risk of laptop theft and data breaches.
About The Customer
Over 17,000 students attend four campuses of Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, Richmond, and Langley. Kwantlen is a comprehensive undergraduate university offering bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, certificates, and citations in over 135 programs. With 17 years of experience in the IT department at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Joseph Leong, Coordinator of Desktop Hardware Services, has observed a significant shift towards portable devices. As the University’s hardware buyer, Joseph has seen an unmistakable trend toward laptops and away from desktops, making laptops a more feasible option for the College.
The Solution
After installing Absolute, a college laptop assigned to an interior design student disappeared. Absolute helped local law enforcement track and recover the laptop soon after it had been purchased at a local flea market. The original owner was elated to get her device back. Kwantlen also found that Absolute was a great tool in reducing drift. They purchased 100 used Dell laptops at a great price and installed Absolute on all of them. They thought they had lost about ten of them, but asset reports revealed that at least half a dozen had simply drifted into other parts of the campus. Absolute proved to be a great tool for school or college IT departments, and Joseph Leong highly recommends it.
Operational Impact
  • Ensures the financial investment in IT equipment and university data is protected.
  • Provides information on the location and status of laptops, helping to prevent laptop drift.
  • Allows the school to provide laptops to the students and faculty to work where they want, while the data remain protected.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Recovered a stolen laptop soon after it was purchased at a local flea market.
  • Protected 100 used Dell laptops purchased at a great price.
