The Challenge
Valyoo, an e-commerce company based in New Delhi, India, was facing a challenge with its reporting efficiency. The company, which operates four different online shopping sites, was experiencing rapid growth and needed a way to keep up with increased reporting demands without having to hire additional staff. The analytics team was using Microsoft Access and Excel to meet reporting needs, but the demand was quickly outstripping what the team could produce using these tools. For a typical request, the team would pull data out of the Microsoft SQL Server database and then create pivot tables in Excel. This process was time-consuming and inefficient, with the team spending approximately four hours per day building these repeated reports with fresh data. Valyoo is a New Delhi-headquartered e-commerce company that specializes in category-specific online shopping destinations. The company currently maintains four sites: LensKart for optical products; WatchKart for quality time pieces; BagsKart for purses and bags; and JewelsKart for jewelry. All of Valyoo’s sites have experienced rapid growth in the past year, growing from roughly 100 employees to 500 in little more than a year. Since its inception in 2010, Valyoo management has been focused on the numbers, crediting that focus with helping to drive the company’s success. The company closely watches Google Analytics data to understand its customers’ behavior on-site.
The Solution
Valyoo decided to implement Tableau, a data visualization tool, to improve its reporting efficiency. The company used Tableau Desktop to create visual reports and Tableau Server to share interactive data visualizations. The company also used the Google Analytics direct connector quite a bit, finding it to be much more efficient than the previous Excel-based method. The implementation of Tableau allowed Valyoo to automate many standard reports that used to take half the day to re-build with new data. This not only saved time for the analytics team but also allowed business users to save time by providing them with access to updated data. The use of Tableau also enabled Valyoo to further propagate its existing data-driven culture, allowing managers to be more self-sufficient.
