The Challenge
Greenergy International Ltd., a London-based fuel company, needed to implement a system that could formally account and measure the tCO2 e emitted by the company annually. The company wanted to improve the quality of its reporting to key stakeholders and needed a fast turnaround. In June 2010, Ecometrica worked with Greenergy to quantify the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their operations for the financial year 2009/10. Ecometrica quantified Greenergy’s emissions from its fuel supply and distribution network, including the UK’s largest biofuel plant, as well as traditional office-based activity and business travel.
About The Customer
Greenergy International Ltd. is a London-based fuel company that supplies around one-fifth of the UK’s road fuel, as well as being the country’s principal supplier of biofuel. Greenergy sells about 175 million litres of fuel in the UK every week – enough to fill nearly 700 trucks per day. The company's customers include major oil companies and supermarkets for retail sale and biofuel for onward blending, as well as bus and logistics companies for fleet use. Greenergy is the 9th largest UK company with a revenue of 2.8 billion GBP.
The Solution
Ecometrica supported Greenergy throughout the process, helping them to define what needed to be included in the scope of their assessment, and how to collect the necessary data. The results of the assessment were presented in a transparent and clear format using Ecometrica’s CDP-accredited web-based carbon accounting platform, Our Impacts. This provided Greenergy with the information necessary to understand and manage the GHG emissions associated with their operations.

Remote Wellhead Monitoring

One of the largest petroleum refineries in the world is equipped to refine various types of crude oil and manufacture various grades of fuel from motor gasoline to Aviation Turbine Fuel. Due to wear and tear, eight hydrogen valves in each refinery were leaking, and each cost $1800 per ton of hydrogen vented. The plant also had leakage on nearly 30 flare control hydrocarbon valves. The refinery wanted a continuous, online monitoring system that could catch leaks early, minimize hydrogen and hydrocarbon production losses, and improve safety for maintenance.
