The Challenge
Edgewood College, an independent liberal arts institution in Madison, Wisconsin, was committed to environmental stewardship and aimed to design a building that was constructed according to green principles. The college's Dominican Hall, a 72,000 sq ft, 4-story residence, was designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) points and was the first college/university residence in Wisconsin to receive Silver Certification. The challenge was to design a building that would sustain itself with renewable energy systems and green materials. All aspects of the design and construction, including door hardware selection, were approached with sustainability in mind.
About The Customer
Edgewood College is an independent liberal arts institution located in Madison, Wisconsin. The college has approximately 2,500 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. The college's Dominican Hall is a 72,000 sq ft, 4-story residence that serves as an example of environmental sustainability. The hall provides a comfortable home to 168 students. From the outset, the college’s Dominican Hall was designed and built to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) points. It was the first college/university residence in Wisconsin to receive Silver Certification.
The Solution
To meet the challenge of designing a sustainable building, architects from the firm Potter Lawson chose DORMA architectural hardware for internal and external doorways throughout Dominican Hall. The selected products included the 8900 Series Surface Door Closers, which offer hydraulic control with modern architectural styling, and the 7400 Series Surface Door Closers, which provide versatility, modern styling, and safe, reliable door control. The 9000 Series Exit Devices were also chosen for their superior durability in high impact applications. The Narrow Stile 9000 Series Exit Devices were used on narrow stile aluminum doors where a standard device wouldn't fit.
