The Challenge
Gamesys was in the process of building a highly scalable poker platform and was exploring various technology options to store the game state. The solution needed to be capable of being used both for real money gaming and social platforms. For real money gaming, redundancy was crucial to ensure that a player’s money couldn’t be lost, requiring replication of results and idempotent handling of actions. For social platforms, the system needed to be fast, elastic, and cost-effective, capable of scaling up quickly based on fluctuating demand. The challenge was to build a platform that could manage failures without losing a player’s money, was highly available and elastic, and could handle tens of thousands of concurrent players.
About The Customer
Gamesys is a leading online gaming company, founded in 2001, with a mission to become the world’s most entertaining online gaming company. Starting with Jackpotjoy, it has grown into an award-winning team of designers, developers, and operators behind some of the leading gaming sites and apps, including Virgin Games. With over 1,000 employees across seven group offices worldwide, Gamesys is headquartered in Central London. The company is known for its innovative approach and commitment to providing an excellent gaming experience to its users.
The Solution
Gamesys chose Hazelcast IMdG to address its need for a fast, elastic, and reliable in-memory computing solution. Hazelcast IMdG was rigorously tested with 100,000 concurrent user sessions in a hybrid setup using their NoSQL database as a system of record. This allowed Gamesys to benefit from the speed of Hazelcast IMdG while leveraging the resilience of the NoSQL database. The deployment experience was straightforward, and the performance was very fast, meeting Gamesys’s criteria for low latency and high throughput. Hazelcast IMdG provided a rich set of capabilities in its SDK, allowing the Gamesys development team to focus on their core domain. The solution was deployed in a client-server topology, enabling fast read and writes, and supporting frequent data modifications. The operations team found it easy to integrate Hazelcast Management Center with their existing monitoring system, simplifying node management and scaling. Hazelcast IMdG’s enterprise Rolling upgrades feature allowed for seamless cluster upgrades without service disruption, reducing downtime and increasing business continuity.
Operational Impact
  • Gamesys’s poker platform was the first use case to utilize Hazelcast IMdG, enabling the development team to launch a competitive poker platform in a crowded market.
  • Hazelcast IMdG’s deployment allowed for fast read and writes, supporting frequent data modifications and proportional scaling of applications and datastore.
  • The operations team found Hazelcast Management Center easy to implement and integrate with existing monitoring systems, simplifying node management and scaling.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Tested with 100,000 concurrent user sessions.
  • Reduced downtime releases due to enterprise Rolling upgrades feature.
