The Challenge
A Global Health Service Company (GHSC) was managing an enterprise-wide DevOps initiative that included mainframe applications teams. The company wanted an integrated IDE for mainframe developers that included program analysis and an intelligent editor that could provide immediate feedback on code changes as developers edit the code. The GHSC is a licensed user of SonarSource products for distributed source code syntax checking. Their management desired similar capabilities for their mainframe DevOps efforts. Quick and immediate feedback on code errors would reduce rework, reduce the number of compiles and improve the quality of COBOL programs released to production. They also wanted their mainframe developers to use similar capabilities and tooling as their distributed systems counterparts.
About The Customer
The customer is a Global Health Service Company (GHSC) that manages an enterprise-wide DevOps initiative, including mainframe applications teams. The company is a licensed user of SonarSource products for distributed source code syntax checking. The GHSC wanted to extend similar capabilities to their mainframe DevOps efforts. The company's mission-critical claims processing application is large, comprising COBOL, Batch, IMS/DB/DC and DB2. The GHSC wanted to reduce rework, reduce the number of compiles and improve the quality of COBOL programs released to production.
The Solution
The mission-critical claims processing application is large, comprising COBOL, Batch, IMS/DB/DC and DB2. During a Topaz POC in early 2017, Compuware demonstrated to the GHSC’s team how the SonarLint COBOL plugin integrated into Topaz for Program Analysis and SlickEdit through Topaz Workbench. A DevOps specialist and a consultant at GHSC worked with Steve Kansa and Andy Jepeal to implement the SonarLint COBOL plugin into Topaz. The Development Lead and consultant of the GHSC claims processing team validated the environment and assisted GHSC in adapting the SonarLint rules to meet GHSC’s needs.
Operational Impact
  • SonarLint has become a critical component for the mainframe developers at the company and will be packaged and included in all future Topaz upgrades.
  • As mainframe developers make code changes with Topaz, they receive immediate feedback on any syntax errors they have made.
  • They receive indications of possible changes they should make to the code to meet GHSC’s coding standards defined with the SonarLint Cobol plug-in.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduced analysis time by 15 to 20% for making program changes over using just ISPF alone.
  • Significant reduction in the number of compiles required as changes are made.
