The Challenge
East Central Energy, a member-owned electric cooperative, was facing challenges in managing its fleet of over 75 vehicles across a large service area of 14 counties. The company needed to optimize its resources and improve its outage response time. The company also had a strong emphasis on safety and wanted to prevent scenarios where technicians or apprentices were unaware of their location during emergency situations. The company also wanted to integrate GPS data with their existing mapping system, MapWise, to improve their outage management system.

East Central Energy is a member-owned electric cooperative formed in 1936. It provides electric service to more than 58,000 homes, farms, and businesses in east central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. The company is headquartered in Braham, Minnesota and has a fleet of over 75 vehicles. East Central Energy serves about 8,000 miles of power line which feeds out to about 58,000 customers. The company has a large footprint and a comparatively smaller fleet size. East Central Energy values accountability, innovation, integrity, and its commitment to the community.
The Solution
East Central Energy implemented the GPS Insight fleet tracking system to gain a top-down view of where their vehicles are at any given point. This helped to effectively shrink their 5,000 square mile service area. The system provided a consistent experience comparable to familiar internet mapping tools. Dispatchers could now identify technicians that are closest to an outage and dispatch them from there rather than from a regional service center that is much further away. The GPS Insight fleet tracking system also helped East Central Energy to best respond to emergency scenarios and proactively improve driving habits. The system also provided vehicle maintenance alerting capabilities, improving safety while reducing associated costs. GPS Insight’s flexibility to integrate valuable data across nearly any platform made it a very intuitive and simple process to connect East Central Energy’s MapWise data with vehicle location data.
