The Challenge
Griffin Communications, a leading broadcaster in the United States, faced significant challenges in sharing content between its production teams located in different parts of Oklahoma. The disconnected and disparate workflows made it difficult for the teams to share content, resulting in wasted time and resources. The lack of a method for streaming or previewing stored media meant that teams had to describe footage over the phone. If a team wanted to preview the footage, a 30-second clip had to be cut and sent to a playout server while the other team recorded the clip. This inefficient process often led to teams from the Oklahoma City and Tulsa stations covering the same events, further wasting valuable resources.

Griffin Communications is a broadcaster based in Oklahoma, United States, with a history of over 55 years. The company’s news station, News 9, was the first to install a weather radar in the country in 1959. Griffin Communications reaches more than 90 percent of Oklahoma households, with its network including two television stations, a statewide radio network, multiple websites, and a mobile information distribution platform. The company’s news stations, located in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, have earned numerous national honors, including a Peabody Award and a National Edward R. Murrow Award.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Griffin Communications implemented an end-to-end production workflow built on the Avid MediaCentral platform. This platform is the industry’s most open, extensible, and customizable media platform. The new workflow enabled Griffin to share content across multiple news and media divisions, enhancing collaboration between team members and increasing productivity. The Avid workflow dramatically improved efficiency across every media department in the Griffin network. News teams from both stations could now access the same iNEWS newsroom management system, see all of the available content, and quickly get the media needed for stories. The cloud-based, web front-end to the Avid MediaCentral platform enabled Griffin’s news and sports crews working in the field to use iNEWS on their iPads to create and edit stories, access media, and work on projects remotely.
