The Challenge
Gibson’s IT team at Hemmera was facing complete lack of control over email. Incoming spam and viruses, unchecked outgoing email, and no visibility were causing lost productivity and exposure to malware, denial of service, data loss, and other serious issues that can severely affect network health and cause liability issues. Before switching to Barracuda, Hemmera used its ISP’s spam filter in an attempt to protect its network against email-borne threats. “It was horrible!” says Gibson when asked about the previous filter. Not only did it fail to keep out spam and malware, but it was extremely difficult to use and lacked necessary features. Gibson describes the non-intuitive management portal as, “The ‘90s called and they want their interface back.” Using it was unbearably frustrating. “We were so tired of having to call the service desk every time we needed a domain whitelisted or an email tracked,” said Gibson. “That filter couldn’t even manage per-user quarantines.” And so began the search for a useful solution that would be easy to manage and have all the features needed to not only to protect the network from email-borne threats, but also to provide comprehensive email governance.
About The Customer
Hemmera is an environmental consulting firm recognized for its strong client focus, diverse expertise, and technical excellence. This fast-growing company has 170 employees in five corporate offices across Canada. Matt Gibson, Systems Administrator, is tasked with network security.
The Solution
Gibson was initially considering several solutions including: Microsoft Forefront, GFI Mailessentials, and SpamAssassin in addition to the Barracuda Spam Firewall. Ideally for Gibson, his new solution would provide extensive control while being efficient, easy to manage, powerful, and affordable. In addition, he points out his favorite feature, the message log. He considers this user-friendly log to be invaluable because he can look at the last six months of email traffic. Having another layer of backup and reporting makes him feel secure. After enduring extreme frustration with an inferior spam filter, Hemmera partnered with Barracuda to install an easy-to-use, affordable solution that had all the features the company was looking for. The email is now safe, the IT department is happy with its spam and virus firewall, and employees are more productive. With the quick expansion of Hemmera, Gibson is looking forward to purchasing more Barracuda solutions soon.

Flex Contact Center: Supporting rapid business growth with IBM Connections Cloud and IBM Verse
Flex Contact Center, a professional services company offering telesales, call-center, anti-attrition, back-office, helpdesk and collection services, has grown rapidly since its establishment in 2009. With operations in 12 sites across two states and four cities in Brazil, the company employs more than 11,000 people. However, the company realized that to prevent barriers to future expansion, it was essential to make it as easy as possible for its people to work together effectively—even if they were based in separate geographical locations. Traditional approaches to collaboration—based on email and phone calls—threatened to reduce productivity. Flex Contact Center wanted to enable better collaboration and communication across its workforce, but did not want to make large investments in infrastructure.

PureFluent: Connecting to partners and customers through the cloud for enhanced productivity
PureFluent, a translation services company, was facing challenges in managing its translation and document review processes. The company often received files in uneditable formats from customers, which required staff members to transfer text to word processing or spreadsheet documents. During the translation process, maintaining version control was a challenge because PureFluent sent work to hundreds of translators in multiple geographic locations. It was also time-consuming for staff to manage the large volume of emails and FTP transactions required to submit translations for customer review and ensure the integration of requested changes. Furthermore, staff were spending significant time hunting through their emails for specific attachments.
