The Challenge
Hibbett Sporting Goods, Inc. faced significant challenges in its distribution operations due to a paper-based system, limited cross-docking capabilities, and inefficient use of space. These constraints hindered the company's aggressive growth plans, which included opening 70 new stores in 2008. The lack of inventory visibility and overall inefficiency in the distribution center further exacerbated the problem, making it difficult for Hibbett to customize its merchandise to meet local demand effectively.
About The Customer
Hibbett Sporting Goods, Inc. is a retailer specializing in sporting equipment, footwear, and apparel, operating through 700 stores across 23 states in the United States. The company primarily serves small-town sports enthusiasts and has ambitious growth plans, including the opening of 70 additional stores in 2008. Hibbett's corporate mission focuses on customizing its merchandise to meet local demand, which poses a significant challenge for its distribution operations. The company's headquarters is located in Birmingham, Alabama, where its primary distribution center is also situated.
The Solution
Hibbett turned to Manhattan Associates to address its distribution challenges while retaining the same basic facility and labor resources. Manhattan's Warehouse Management and Supply Chain Intelligence solutions were implemented to automate the distribution process, facilitate cross-docking, maximize labor resources, and provide continuous performance analysis. The Warehouse Management solution handles both inbound receiving and outbound order processing, interfacing directly with Hibbett's Merchandise Management System (MMS) to pass orders for fulfillment. It also accepts advance shipment notifications to match orders with inbound receipts, facilitating cross-docking. The Supply Chain Intelligence solution allows Hibbett to monitor events and analyze overall operations, providing real-time alerts to exceptions and offering intuitive graphics and reports for performance monitoring.
Operational Impact
  • Hibbett can now track goods automatically and in real time from receipt to shipment, significantly improving inventory visibility.
  • The number of cross-docked goods increased from 42% to 94%, allowing merchandise to move quickly from suppliers to retail shelves.
  • Space utilization improved, extending the lifespan of Hibbett's 220,000 square foot facility and enabling it to support the distribution needs of an additional 960 stores.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Increased throughput by 17.34%.
  • Reduced vendor-to-store turnaround time by 13 days or 57%.
  • Increased cross-docked goods from 42% to 94%.
