The Challenge
A regional initiative funded by the North East Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (RIEP) aimed to optimize the efficiency of waste collection routes using RouteSmart software. The focus was on reducing vehicle and fuel usage through route reconfiguration, maximizing vehicle payloads, and reducing collection costs. Of the 12 authorities in the North East UK, 11 participated in this initiative. Several authorities reduced their working week to four days, allowing vehicles to be utilized elsewhere, and introduced zonal working to improve service efficiency and reliability. In some cases, there was integration of commercial waste collection with household waste, ensuring that tonnages collected per route were maximized and balanced across the routes.
About The Customer
The North East UK consists of 12 independent waste management authorities responsible for waste collection and disposal services. These authorities face significant challenges due to reduced resources and high service expectations. They aim to deliver budget efficiencies while protecting and enhancing public services. The regional initiative funded by the North East Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (RIEP) aimed to optimize waste collection routes using RouteSmart software. The focus was on reducing vehicle and fuel usage, maximizing vehicle payloads, and reducing collection costs. Eleven of the 12 authorities participated in this initiative, reporting significant benefits.
The Solution
RouteSmart software was implemented to optimize waste collection routes, reduce vehicle and fuel usage, and maximize vehicle payloads. The software allowed for route reconfiguration, leading to significant cost savings. Several authorities reduced their working week to four days, allowing vehicles to be utilized elsewhere, and introduced zonal working to improve service efficiency and reliability. In some cases, commercial waste collection was integrated with household waste collection, ensuring that tonnages collected per route were maximized and balanced. The initiative led to significant cost savings and improved customer satisfaction.
Operational Impact
  • Several authorities reduced their working week to four days, allowing vehicles to be utilized elsewhere.
  • Introduction of zonal working improved service efficiency and reliability.
  • Integration of commercial waste collection with household waste collection maximized and balanced tonnages collected per route.
Quantitative Benefit
  • £200,000 annual savings reported by Stockton-on-Tees from route reduction.
  • £250,000 annual savings by North Tynesdale from route reduction.
  • 90% customer satisfaction rating in North Tynesdale, up from 70% before the project.
