The Challenge
HSBC, one of the world's largest banks, was facing the challenge of technological disruption in the financial services space. This disruption brought new regulations, higher customer expectations, and increased competition. To stay ahead, HSBC needed to become the disruptor, which required the use of APIs to securely unlock data from thousands of applications and make core banking services available to internal and third-party developers. The bank aimed to improve the customer experience and open new revenue channels by launching an API developer portal, increasing customer loyalty, and partnering with third-party platforms to deliver new HSBC products and services.
About The Customer
HSBC is one of the world's largest banks, serving over 40 million customers across the globe. The bank has witnessed the power of technological disruption in the financial services space, which has brought about new regulations, higher customer expectations, and increased competition. To thrive in this era of disruption, HSBC has recognized the need to drive innovation and disruption itself, rather than being disrupted by others. The bank's objectives include improving the customer experience, opening new revenue channels, and becoming the bank of the future.
The Solution
To transform into a digital platform powered by APIs, HSBC partnered with MuleSoft to implement an API-led approach to connectivity. This enabled the bank to surface data from legacy systems and applications using APIs. HSBC developed APIs for core banking services and provided them to developers to accelerate innovation. The bank also harnessed the power of external APIs to drive collaboration and open new revenue channels. HSBC developed an API portal using Anypoint API Community Manager, which is built on Salesforce Community Cloud and Salesforce Service Cloud. The portal enables internal and third-party developers to reuse APIs to offer new products and services for customers.
Operational Impact
  • HSBC has quadrupled the speed of innovation by releasing Open Banking APIs, delivering seamless customer experiences, and forging new partnerships.
  • HSBC's Open Banking API portal now spans more than 30 markets and three global businesses, serving over 30,000 HSBC developers and thousands of third-party developers.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 75% decrease in development time
  • 4x faster innovation
  • 30+ markets served by developer portal
