The Challenge
HHI Construction Equipment (HCE) faced the challenge of becoming one of the top five worldwide suppliers of construction equipment by 2010. This was particularly difficult as the supply of construction equipment exceeded demand. To achieve this goal, HCE needed to bring new products to market quickly, which required optimizing the design process, integrating the entire product lifecycle, and improving collaboration between HCE and its suppliers. Additionally, HCE needed to enhance visualization for faster and more accurate validation of designs.
About The Customer
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is a Korean company that operates a global business network across six business divisions: Shipbuilding, Offshore & Engineering, Industrial Plant & Engineering, Engine & Machinery, Electro Electric Systems, and Construction Equipment. The Construction Equipment Division, which began operations in 1985, employs 1,200 people and has grown into a world-class producer of construction equipment. The division has developed 54 vehicle models, including excavators, wheel loaders, forklifts, and skid steer loaders. With a manufacturing capacity of 19,000 units a year at its Ulsan factory in Korea and additional plants in China, HHI markets its construction equipment through 436 authorized distributors in 92 countries.
The Solution
HHI Construction Equipment (HCE) implemented Siemens PLM Software technology to address its challenges. The solution included the integration of Siemens’ NX™ digital product development software and Teamcenter® digital lifecycle management software. A 16-member team, comprising half from HCE and half from Siemens PLM Software Korea, executed the implementation using the Teamcenter methodology. A six-month pilot project involving three models (an excavator, a wheel loader, and a forklift truck) was conducted to evaluate the new approach. The PLM technology was successfully implemented by the target date. The implementation included 110 licenses of NX and 250 of Teamcenter, enabling HCE to design vehicles in 3D, utilize existing CAD data, and perform early simulations of product performance. Teamcenter served as the backbone for global R&D collaboration, managing bills of material, engineering changes, and product variants.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Siemens PLM Software technology has led to increased productivity at HCE.
  • The design process has been revitalized, allowing for faster and more accurate validation of designs.
  • There has been a significant increase in data re-use due to the classification of parts, facilitated by Teamcenter.
Quantitative Benefit
  • HHI Construction Equipment (HCE) has a manufacturing capacity of 19,000 units a year at its Ulsan factory in Korea.
  • The division has developed 54 vehicle models in product categories such as excavators, wheel loaders, forklifts, and skid steer loaders.
  • HCE markets its construction equipment through 436 authorized distributors in 92 countries.
