The Challenge
The IT department of a U.S. state was managing a suite of network and application resources for use by all other departments and agencies of the state for communication and business operations. To meet the growing demands of their stakeholders for modernization of networking resources, the CIO and IT teams began implementing an ambitious digital transformation (DX) strategy that included the construction of new data centers, the closure of others, and increasing cloud services. The intended effect was to improve efficiency and security for government agencies and a distributed workforce. The IT organization quickly realized that to succeed in their DX and modernization initiatives, they also needed to improve their network and application visibility strategy in data centers, extend it to the cloud, and improve services, security, and troubleshooting across the board. The complexity of integrating hybrid infrastructures coupled with migrations to and from other data centers and colocation facilities, cloud services, and security, were hurdles to streamlining operations. Balancing IT resource allocation and implementing reliable private and public cloud backup and recovery solutions were also considerations to future growth plans.
About The Customer
The customer is the information technology (IT) department of a U.S. state. This department manages a suite of network and application resources for use by all other departments and agencies of the state for communication and business operations. Millions of citizens and thousands of civil servants, including high-profile public figures, environmental and safety personnel, public information and financial service departments, and field regulators, depend on this state’s data centers, networks, and services every day to do their jobs well. The IT department is responsible for meeting the growing demands of their stakeholders for modernization of networking resources. The CIO and IT teams have begun implementing an ambitious digital transformation (DX) strategy that includes the construction of new data centers, the closure of others, and increasing cloud services. The intended effect is to improve efficiency and security for government agencies and a distributed workforce.
The Solution
To gain comprehensive visibility into its data center and cloud environments, the state’s IT organization selected a combination of NETSCOUT packet-based solutions including nGeniusONE, InfiniStreamNG appliances, nGenius Packet Flow Switches (PFS), nGenius® Packet Flow Operating System (PFOS), and NETSCOUT TAPS. The IT team has strategically placed TAPS throughout their private and public infrastructure for aggregation and distribution of packet traffic using nGenius PFSs for use by downstream monitoring devices, including ISNG appliances. For on-premises and cloud visibility, the nGeniusONE solution uses smart data produced from ISNG appliances and offers integrated analysis layers, such as Service Dependency Mapping, Session Analysis, and Packet Analysis. The IT organization began leveraging NETSCOUT deep packet inspection (DPI) at scale in their infrastructure core. This provided visibility in front of and behind their VPN firewalls, edge firewalls, and hosting firewalls. With this information, they were able to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues much faster and more accurately than before.
Operational Impact
  • Created a packet-centric solution for real-time visibility into data centers and cloud
  • Improved mean time to knowledge (MTTK) and reduced mean time to repair (MTTR)
  • Increased the performance, security, and reliability of their hybrid cloud environment
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduced mean time to repair (MTTR)
  • Improved mean time to knowledge (MTTK)
