The Challenge
When deploying global networks, it’s important to be able to quickly identify what is on a customer’s network. During deployment and transition into steady state, it’s imperative to be able to quickly receive monitoring information related to critical IT infrastructure without having to take time to build and deploy complex monitoring tools. Additionally, there is a need to be able to monitor and report network performance from the end users’ perspective rather than from the core of the network where performance is generally quite good. Informatik Group looked to Domotz as a solution that would provide telemetry to address network performance issues before the client contacted them. While engaged with a private equity firm involved in the acquisition of several divisions of a multinational company in the oil & gas industry, Informatik Group needed to assume and deploy a global network remotely for 30 locations that were spread across six continents. What made this extremely challenging, is that the deployment had to occur within a 48-hour period and had to be implemented by a US-based team of network engineers working in shifts.
About The Customer
Informatik Group, LLC is a professional consultancy team focused on providing rapid Information Technology transformation solutions to global organizations. Among other clientele, they work with Private Equity Firms on pre-merger technical assessments, planning and execution of global networks and data center deployments, ERP integrations and post migration support. Informatik Group helps its customers understand their technical landscape and associated financial obligations, assess, optimize and execute a transformation plan, and provide post-transformation monitoring and knowledge transfer to steady state support organizations. Informatik Groups highest profile clients are in the Energy, Pharmaceutical, Food Manufacturing and Logistics industries.
The Solution
To prepare for this deployment, Informatik Group’s team built and shipped out a “Network-in-a-box” to every location. Domotz, a key part of this “Network-in-a-box”, was used for the monitoring, telemetry, mapping and remote access. Upon deployment, Domotz quickly discovered all network devices not previously known to Informatik Group. While the discovery of new and unexpected systems is normal for a new acquisition, the details provided by Domotz made it easy to comprehend classify and organize how the team would deal with these systems. In the initial phases of a project, this discovery of these new systems helped to identify network devices that Informatik Group may not have otherwise known to ask about and were considered critical to the operation of the organization. As an example, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and video conferencing systems, were discovered by Domotz but not originally reported by some sites. Using Domotz, Informatik Group was able to easily access the critical network infrastructure of the systems they deployed and the newly discovered systems downstream of their networks. Each Domotz agent was configured to provide real-time monitoring of critical network infrastructure, including routers, firewalls, switches, wireless access points, printers and ISP circuits among others. By the end of their, successful, 48-hour deployment, Informatik Group was monitoring 30 sites. Each of these sites, with over 590 critical infrastructure devices and more than 2,600 standard devices, were being actively monitored by Domotz, with real-time alerts and telemetry.
Operational Impact
  • Informatik Group was able to deploy a global network remotely for 30 locations spread across six continents within a 48-hour period.
  • Domotz quickly discovered all network devices not previously known to Informatik Group, including critical systems like SCADA and video conferencing systems.
  • Each Domotz agent was configured to provide real-time monitoring of critical network infrastructure, including routers, firewalls, switches, wireless access points, printers, and ISP circuits.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Informatik Group estimated that, by implementing Domotz, they saved their client well over $250,000 in travel and resources.
