The Challenge
The InterContinental Boston is a waterfront hotel and residential complex that has become a focal point in the city. Its 22-story blue glass façade curves skyward, mirroring the profile of the sailing boats in the harbor it overlooks. The hotel offers public access to the scenic waterfront. The first three floors of the InterContinental provide a variety of restaurants and conference facilities. On floors 4 through 12, the hotel offers 424 guest rooms and suites. 130 condominiums, ranging from studios to 4-bedroom penthouses, are available as private homes on the upper floors. Given the InterContinental Boston’s function and location, both exterior and interior doorways experience high traffic—residents and hotel guests, conventioners, diners, and strollers enjoying HarborWalk create constant foot traffic day and night. This heavy usage called for extremely durable and reliable door hardware while the luxury setting required pleasing aesthetics to complement and enhance the hotel décor.

The hotel is part of HarborWalk, an extended walkway stretching for miles along Boston Harbor, and offers public access to the scenic waterfront. The first three floors of the InterContinental provide a variety of restaurants and conference facilities. On floors 4 through 12, the hotel offers 424 guest rooms and suites. 130 condominiums, ranging from studios to 4-bedroom penthouses, are available as private homes on the upper floors. The hotel experiences high traffic due to its function and location, with residents, hotel guests, conventioners, diners, and strollers enjoying HarborWalk creating constant foot traffic day and night.
The Solution
To meet the demanding requirements of the InterContinental Boston, specifiers chose DORMA architectural hardware. Grade 1 heavy-duty 9000 Series Exit Devices, installed with surface vertical rods, work both interior and exterior doors throughout the hotel. In addition, doors to the outside use 8900 Series Door Closers, which provide modern architecturally styled aesthetics while offering versatility to fit nearly any application. In noise-sensitive areas and where door hardware needed an extra measure of design, specifiers selected elegantly styled TS93 GSR Series Door Closer in Contur Design, which feature a unique cam and roller design for smooth, quiet, and efficient operation. BTS80 Series Door Closers meet another design requirement—that architectural hardware be invisible. These concealed closers allow the interior design to emphasize the beauty of the door itself. 900 Series Holders complete the range of DORMA door closers specified for the hotel.
