The Challenge
BillGuard is a company that revolutionizes the personal finance field by tackling the problem of unwanted charges on people’s bills, credit card statements, and bank accounts. They have an iPhone app that people can use to track their spending and save money. The challenge was to make data accessible and actionable for all the teams in the organization. They needed a tool that could refresh data on its own, be modularized so that if one graph doesn’t work, it won’t break the entire dashboard. They also needed a tool that could easily add another stat to the dashboard when things change or when they do something that requires following another key metric.
About The Customer
BillGuard is a personal finance security service powered by the collective knowledge of millions of people. They are a group of data scientists, mathematicians, security experts and industry leaders that have come together to protect consumers by facilitating the sharing of that knowledge. BillGuard investors include the founders and CEOs of Google, PayPal, Verisign and Sun Microsystems. The company has offices in Tel Aviv and the United States. The company's main product is an iPhone app that people can use to track their spending and save money.
The Solution
BillGuard uses Geckoboard, a tool that does all the refreshing on its own, and it’s modularized. If one piece or one graph doesn’t work, it won’t break the entire dashboard. It will just not refresh that one and show a little red icon in the corner. They use Geckoboard mostly with custom widgets, so they’re still doing most the logic on their servers and query their servers for data, but here and there they use it to connect to services directly. In their main office, in Tel Aviv, they have an LCD with Geckoboard on it, and some people have the URL and they follow it on their own computers. In their US office people use it only on their own computers.
Operational Impact
  • Geckoboard makes it really easy to add another stat the dashboard, so when things change or when they do something that requires following another key metric, it’s really easy to just add another metric to an existing dashboard.
  • Geckoboard's modularity ensures that if one piece or one graph doesn’t work, it won’t break the entire dashboard.
  • Geckoboard's refreshing feature ensures that the data is always up-to-date.
