The Challenge
J.F. Kitching & Son Ltd., a third-generation family business providing aggregate transportation services, faced a significant challenge in accurately billing its customers. The company bills customers based on the time it takes to deliver the product rather than by weight. This method of billing was complicated by the use of a local toll highway, which has tiered rates based on the time of usage. The company needed an accurate way to measure the hours it took to deliver its products and services to customers.
About The Customer
J.F. Kitching & Son Ltd. is a third-generation family business based in Queensville, Ontario. The company provides safe, reliable, on-time aggregate transportation services. It operates a fleet of 45 vehicles, including highway tractors, dump trucks, boom trucks, and crane trucks. The company bills its customers based on the time it takes to deliver the product rather than by weight. To support timely delivery of materials, the company regularly uses a local toll highway, the 407 ETR Express Toll Route, which has tiered rates based on the time of usage.
The Solution
To solve its billing challenges, J.F. Kitching implemented the Geotab telematics solution for its heavy trucks. The solution has made billing more transparent for both the company and its customers. The company set up a geofencing zone in the MyGeotab fleet management software over the entire operational area of the 407 tollway, allowing the team to verify trips and streamline the billing process. The Geotab GO® Plug-&-Play GPS vehicle tracking device, which can be easily removed from an old vehicle and installed into its replacement, provided the flexibility and convenience the company needed.
Operational Impact
  • Improved transparency in billing for both the company and its customers.
  • Streamlined billing process through the use of geofencing.
  • Enhanced service and strengthened customer relations through better visibility on operations.
